About STESSA 2026 – Reinvented for India

Introduction

The 12th International Conference on the Behaviour of Steel Structures in Seismic Areas (STESSA 2026) marks a new chapter in the STESSA legacy. For the first time, this prestigious event will go beyond a research conference to include a dedicated industry and technology exhibition, positioning STESSA 2026 as India’s largest convergence of steel structure professionals.

The event will unite researchers, structural engineers, fabricators, manufacturers, government bodies, and policymakers shaping the future of steel construction.

Theme: “Bridging Research, Practice, and Innovation in Steel for Seismic Resilience”

Objectives

Although steel remains the best material for seismic-resistant steel structures, past earthquakes have sometimes undermined the ideal image of steel. In many cases, the material’s ductility has not been fully exploited due to various factors that need to be better understood. Therefore, it is imperative to critically analyze the structures, modify the design procedures, and adopt robust detailing schemes to address the shortcomings in the interpretation of material behaviour, elements, joints, and systems subjected to earthquake loads.

Improving structural ductility plays a key role in traditional seismic-resistant designs. Some critical areas that need attention include the use of the multiple-level design concept, understanding the demands expected during both near-field and far-field earthquakes, and identifying the factors influencing the behaviour of steel structures. The latest advancements in the field must be disseminated within the scientific community to promote the transfer of knowledge and enhance global understanding of seismic engineering.

Why STESSA 2026 is Different

STESSA 2026 introduces an Exhibition & Industry Interaction Pavilion, providing a unique platform to showcase technologies, connect with decision-makers, and demonstrate innovations across the steel construction sector.
